Week #3, Class #6: "Hu Jintao Jets Into Washington" (YOUTUBE Video)
For this Thursday's class, watch this short video and then blog 5 sentences of reaction - what is the thesis of this video? Is the thesis accurate, in your mind? Why or why not?
What questions does this short video raise for you?
The video is telling us that China has pretty much won. China is going to own us sooner or later. China has bought us and will use force to take what we owe. The message may be that America needs to man up and stop killing our country economically. In this video, Obama was pretty much kissing Hu Jintao’s ass because we need them and want to stay in good terms with them, but then again the US needs to stand up for its own country.
To me, this video conveyed the message that China is Superior to the US, and we know it. It showed President Obama groveling to Hu Jintao, while he remained uninterested. The only aspect in which the Chinese President seemed interested, was in the three women at the end. This video made me think about how America has always advertised itself as the most independent superpower in the world, which is a stark comparison to the America portrayed in the clip. What will it take for the US to no longer need the support of other countries such as China?
What I got from the video is that the Chinese President Hu Jintao is in the United States to discuses different issues with Barack Obama. From the video it looked like Jintao wanted to take over Obama’s office and or job. They should an image of Wal-Mart and Hooters which isnt really what the United States is about. Jintao was also given a cowboy hat as a symbolic gift as the American Spirit of Independence. Overall I thought this video was really weird, and it dint make much sense to me.
When watching this video the main message i got is that China is better than the united States. Hu Juntao seems very uninterested in everything that Obama has to say throughout this clip. To me this is showing that the way that the United States is perceived by china is very different in how we perceive ourselves. It seems as though China is using things in this video that they think represent our culture. for example like Elise said, the cow boy hat or Hooters, which is the overall wrong perception. it seems as though China thinks they are superior due to these "americanized" items .
What I got out of this video is that China already, or soon will, own us due to their government buying up all of our debt. It also seems to me that while we value ourselves as a major super power in world, China sees us as an asset that can be bought and eventually used however they so please. This video also shows me that people in China most likely don't take American's or our Government very seriously, depicted by Hu Jintao ignoring President Obama throughout the entire video, and setting up shop in the White House as soon as he gets there, as if he owns the place. This also shows that China has just as many stereotypes about our society and culture as we do about them. The way I see it yes we do need China right now, but they also need us, and I don't think that sucking up to them the way Obama does in this video is the way to get ourselves out of the predicament we are in. A question I have is, how will all this play out, and will our governments ever be able to see past the power struggle to the real issues at hand?
This video is meant to depict the concern of China finally expecting the return of the money that we owe them. It shows Obama and the White house being easily taken over by the Chinese President, in addition to showing our dependence on them for both the products that we sell and for the funds that they have lent us. Although I thought that this video was very disrespectful towards both parties, I feel that it also has some truth. I don't think that we would be capable of picking up the slack if China one day decided to stop making cheap products for us, and we would definitely be left in a bad situation if they demanded their money back. One question I have is what would the repercussions be of China stopping the production of products for the U.S.?
The video was strange. Animated Hu Jintao was ignoring Obama the whole time, brushing past him when he arrived and ending up doing body shots at Hooters without him. The video depicted an Obama who was eager to have a positive relationship with a much less interested Hu Jintao. From what I've read about Obama's meetings with Hu Jintao, this thesis is fairly accurate. The Chinese flag on top of the Walmart and the assault rifle-wielding panda bear guards were interesting.
Our country is in debt brillions if not trillions of dollars, However, already due owe China billions of dollars as well. Without China we would not be here, and this video makes it appear is if China wants nothing to do with us. They just want us to pay them back all the debt that has accumulated.
To me this video basically says that China thinks the United States is a bunch of idiots and that they own us. Unfortunately they kinda do own us. My questions are, When are the Chinese going to come knocking for that money we owe them? Will it be hostile or will they try a peaceful method first? Should us as Americans be ready to fight back against the massive communist army?
The video really used confusing rhetoric, I'm not sure who this video was targeted to but it seemed very childish. The message seemed to be that the American government was inferior to the Chinese. Obama was portrayed as a fool, and the Hu was very cool and collected, until the end when he did the shot off of the girl at hooters... what the hell was that last part?
This video kind of made me a little upset. It seemed that whoever made this video was trying to give President Hu a bad reputation. In the video Hu is portrayed as a man who just wants to come over and have fun, going to Walmart and Hooters, jumping on the bed. It seemed like he didn't want to discuss the issues of the summit and wasn't taking his trip to America seriously, and the video was trying to manipulate the viewer into believing this, but I don't think this is accurate. Maybe I missed the point of the video, but were the topics that were proposed to be discussed at the summit, not actually talked about? Did President Hu treat these issues as insignificant compared to China's own struggles?
I think this video showed both China, and America in a negative light. I'm not sure what the point was, but it clearly displayed the Chinese president as immature and snooty, and showed president Obama as pandering to his childish behavior. I understand that portraying America this way somewhat reflects certain views, especially since we owe China a lot of money, but I'm not sure why China was being portrayed the way it was. This video reminded me of an episode of the Colbert Report I saw over break, where the Governor of Pennsylvania was calling America a country of wusses. the interview I'm talking about is here: http://bit.ly/ekFRqJ
This video portrays that China is boss. Since we owe they an exorbitant amount of money, it seems like the video is trying to say that they are going to have a say in what we do. There was also the line that Obama said, “Mutual harmony is what I’m talking about. Independence is out. Mutual dependence is in.” This is just reinforcing the idea that China will be manipulating the US into a possible communist nation. While I do not believe that is all true, I do thing that is what the video is portraying. My question is what is going to happen when China wants their money back?
After watching this video I am a little embarrassed for our country and the image we are portraying to the rest of the world. Right now our debt has become so massive that we are essentially groveling to the Chinese government to clean up our mistakes. The video points out that America has lost its strength and even our precious commodities, which we hold so dear, are manufactured in China. I don’t know about everybody else, but for me this video was certainly a wake up call, and it even pissed me off a little bit. This clip makes me feel like the Chinese government does not respect America enough to offer us help. Instead, they feel that they are our mighty saviors by paying off our debts and making us look foolish.
My question is how does this attitude of inferiority translate to the general Chinese public? Does the average Chinese citizen feel this way as well?
In this video the idea seems to be that America is weak and dependent on China. President Hu flying into the US on an invisible fighter jet and rearranging the White House are just a few examples used to show how China is superior and "owns" Obama and the US. Also the example of the cowboy hat that was made in China shows the US dependence on China. What the video does not include is any benefits on China's end, other than control over US policies and politics.
My question about China is.. Is this the view that many people in China today have of America and the American people?
This video is basically saying that China thinks the US is a Joke. In the clip Obama is sucking up to Hu Jintao because he knows we need China’s money, but Hu Jintao ignores him. The circus music in the background made it pretty clear that the US is getting made fun of, however in reality it is only a matter of time until China comes looking for the money we own them.
This short clip pretty much says that China is superior to the United States, and you can see it right from the beginning. When he gets out of the plane he just throws Obama the keys like he is a valet. This reminded me of parts of many movies where they do that by mistake. The whole time Obama was showing him around the place, Hu is just making him self comfortable and doing what he wants, showing that China can do what ever they want to the United states. I think this video shows that we are China's pets, and what ever they do, of coarse we arent going to complain or say anything, because they own us.
The video is telling us that China has pretty much won. China is going to own us sooner or later. China has bought us and will use force to take what we owe.
